The Yahoo Outlook Connection

This page provides the information you need to make a Yahoo Outlook connection. We've developed and tested Yahoo Mail Outlook connection procedures for Outlook 2010, Outlook 2007, Outlook 2003. Each procedure walks you through the whole process step-by-step.

Why would you want to do this? What's the benefit of moving your email from Yahoo to Outlook? Here are two big benefits: convenience and power.

  • Convenience - Wouldn't it be more convenient to get all your email in one place? Right now, some of your email is going into your Outlook Inbox, and some of it is going to your Yahoo Mail Inbox. All your physical mail gets delivered to a single mailbox - shouldn't your electronic mail work the same?

  • Power - The Yahoo Mail interface works well enough. But when you copy your email from Yahoo to Outlook, you get the benefit of all of Outlook's powerful email and personal information management tools. You'll be able to apply Outlook's rules and folders to your Yahoo mail, and take advantage of Outlook's tight integration between email and your calendar, contacts, tasks and so on. All it takes is a few minutes to set up your Yahoo Mail Outlook connection.

IMPORTANT: To keep things from getting too confusing, all our Outlook 2010 information now resides on a separate site. If you are using Outlook 2010, you want to be on this Yahoo Outlook 2010 connection page.

You can only make this Yahoo to Outlook connection if you have a premium Yahoo mail account. In other words, you must be using either:

If you don't have one of these account types, you cannot connect Yahoo Mail and Outlook. But don’t worry. This is easy to fix. And the benefits of a Yahoo Outlook connection make it worthwhile to do so.

Having trouble sending email when on the road?

SMTP2Go is the answer, anywhere on Earth.

Convert Your Yahoo Mail Account to Yahoo! Mail Plus

IMPORTANT: A new version of Yahoo Mail came out in the middle of 2011. You are probably already using it. And you may be wondering if this change affects the way a Yahoo to Outlook connection works. Don't worry. While many things changed in the Yahoo Mail web interface, the Yahoo Outlook connection was unaffected. The procedures listed here work perfectly whether you are using Classic Yahoo Mail, the New Yahoo Mail, or switching back and forth between them whenever the mood strikes you. The connection you are about to make will continue to work perfectly, now and in the future.

The process of configuring both types of Yahoo Mail to work with Outlook is almost the same. The following steps walk you through the process:

NOTE: As part of the process for configuring a Yahoo Outlook connection you will tell the Yahoo mail servers not to keep copies of messages on the server once you view them with Outlook. In other words, you will transfer your email from Yahoo to Outlook. Your Yahoo messages will not be visible from the Yahoo Web interface once they get copied over to Outlook (you will have access to them from your browser if you have Outlook Web Access, a.k.a. OWA set up).

This is most likely the way you want things to work anyway (having multiple versions of a message floating around is a recipe for confusion), but is something to be aware of.

Configuring Outlook 2007 to Work with Yahoo Mail

Outlook 2007 has this great Auto Account Setup feature. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work for setting up a Yahoo Outlook connection. So we're going to have to do the Yahoo Outlook setup manually. The procedure is similar, but not identical to configuring earlier versions of Outlook. Please follow these steps to get Outlook configured:
  1. In the Outlook main menu, click Tools, then Account Settings. This opens the Account Settings dialog box.

  2. On the E-mail tab, click New. This launches the Add New E-mail Account wizard.

  3. On the Choose E-mail Service screen, select Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP, or HTTP, then click Next.

  4. On the Auto Account Setup screen, select Manually configure server settings of additional server types and click Next.

  5. On the Choose E-mail Service screen, select Internet E-mail, then click Next.

  6. Enter your name as you want it to appear in messages in the Your Name field.

  7. Enter your full Mail Plus address (user@yahoo.com) or Business Mail address (for example, user@yourdomain.com) in the E-mail Address field.

  8. Select POP3 in the Account Type list.

  9. For a Mail Plus account, enter "plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com" in the Incoming mail server (POP3) field and "plus.smtp.mail.yahoo.com" in the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) field.

  10. For a Business Mail account, enter "pop.bizmail.yahoo.com" in the Incoming mail server field and "smtp.bizmail.yahoo.com" in the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) field.

  11. Enter your Yahoo user name in the User Name field. For a Mail Plus account, enter your mail address without the "@yahoo.com". For a Business Mail account, enter your mail address including the "@yourdomain.com".

  12. Enter your Yahoo Mail password in the Password field, then enter it again in the Retype Password field.

  13. Select Remember password so you don't want to have to enter your password manually each time Outlook checks your mail.

  14. Deselect Log on using Secure Password Authentication (clear the checkbox).

  15. Click More Settings to open the Internet E-mail Settings dialog box.

  16. Click the Outgoing Server tab.

  17. Select My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication.

  18. Select Use same settings as my incoming mail server.

  19. Click the Advanced tab.

  20. Deselect Leave a copy of messages on the server (clear the checkbox).

  21. Deselect This server requires a secure connection (SSL) for both Incoming server (POP3) and Outgoing server (SMTP).

  22. Click OK to return to the Internet E-mail Settings screen.

  23. Click Test Account Settings. The Test Account Settings dialog box appears and Outlook sends a test message using the settings you have just entered. If all is well, a Congratulations! message appears in the dialog box. Click Close to close this dialog box. If you didn't see the Congratulations! message, go back through this procedure from the top to check all your settings.

  24. Click Next then Finish.

  25. Note: If the Test Account Settings dialog box reports that Outlook cannot send the test message, and you have checked that you have completed all other steps correctly, your ISP may be blocking Port 25. To find out what that means and how to fix the problem, go to the Mail Tips page and view the Work around the Port 25 problem tip.

Now you're ready to go. You should have a functional Yahoo Mail to Outlook 2007 connection, and Outlook should start downloading mail from your Yahoo account.

  13. Click the Outgoing Server tab.

  14. Set the My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication check box.

  15. Select Use same settings as my incoming mail server.

  16. Click the Advanced tab.

  17. Make sure that This server requires a secure connection (SSL) is NOT checked under either Incoming server (POP3) or Outgoing server (SMTP).

  18. Make sure that Leave a copy of messages on the server is NOT checked.

  19. Click OK to return to the Internet E-mail Settings screen.

  20. Click Test Account Settings. The Test Account Settings dialog box appears and Outlook sends a test message using the settings you have just entered. If all is well, a Congratulations! message appears in the dialog box. You've completed your Yahoo Outlook connection. Click Close to close this dialog box. If you didn't see the Congratulations! message, go back through this procedure from the top to check all your settings.

  22. Click Next then Finish.

Now you are ready to go. You should have a functional Yahoo Outlook connection, and Outlook should start downloading mail from your Yahoo account.
