Using Lookout for Outlook for Superior Searching

Note: Microsoft has removed the Lookout download pages, replacing them with a link to Windows Desktop Search. As of June 14, 2007, you can still download Lookout from third-party websites, but Microsoft is clearly phasing it out. I will keep this page here for reference, but can no longer recommending Lookout with Microsoft phasing it out.

Using Lookout is a great way to make Outlook easier and more fun to use. Once you install it, you'll see a new Outlook toolbar, the Lookout bar. You may also see a little pop-up window in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen as Lookout indexes things so it can give you fast search results.

Unless you want to get fancy, all you need to do is type the words you're looking for into the text box and press Enter or click Search. Within seconds, Lookout displays a list of places it found your search terms. Double-click items in the list to open them. That's all there is to it.

Downloading and Installing Lookout

Follow these steps to download and install Lookout:

  1. Close Outlook.

  2. Click here to open a new browser window and go to the Lookout Download page.

  3. Follow the instructions you see on the page to download and install Lookout.

NOTE: If necessary, the Lookout installer will fetch and install something called the Microsoft .NET framework. This is software Microsoft created for other software developers to use. There's a good chance it is already on your computer, but if not, Lookout will take care of it for you.

  4. Restart Outlook. Lookout will offer you a short tutorial on how to use it. It only takes a couple of minutes to walk through and I recommend you do so.
NOTE: Lookout has a sibling product, a desktop search tool that can search Outlook along with your desktop, but isn't integrated into Outlook the way Lookout is. For more information on that, you can visit desktop.msn.com.

That's the basic information you need about using Lookout for Outlook. From here you can:
