Trust Center Centralizes Security Settings (Outlook 2007)

Security settings are scattered all over the place in earlier versions of Outlook. Trust Center brings them all into one place in the Outlook 2007 interface (and the other Office 2007 products). It makes the chore of managing Outlook security a little more enjoyable.

You open the Trust Center by clicking Tools in the main Outlook menu, then Trust Center in the Tools menu. The center has two panes, with the left showing security areas, categories of security such as E-mail Security or Attachment Handling. The right pane shows the options for the selected security area. For Outlook 2007, beta 2, the left pane of the Trust Center contained 8 security areas, and looked like this:

As you might expect, selecting a security area in this pane causes the relevant options to appear in the right pane. For example, here's what the options for the Automatic Download security area look like:

While the security areas have all been pulled together under the Trust Center, the look and feel of the options pane for each area varies greatly. For more detailed information on the various security areas and their options, you can dig around in Outlook's help system, or consult a book like my, How to Do Everything with Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 published in December of 2006. You can learn more about the book by following the link above. Just be sure to close the window and return here when you're done ordering a copy of the book!
