RSS: Subscribe by Pasting a Link (Outlook 2007)

This page covers one of the ways to add an RSS feed to Outlook 2007. It shows you how to subscribe by pasting a link to the RSS feed into Outlook manually. This will probably be the most common way you subscribe to RSS feeds, so is well worth mastering. The step-by-step procedure shown here uses the Living with Outlook RSS feed. Get your first RSS subscription in Outlook and get notified of the latest in Outlook news. What a deal!

Read on and you will be able to subscribe by pasting a link in minutes.

How to Subscribe by Pasting a Link

The first thing you need is a link to paste. You'll find them by clicking on the orange RSS buttons visible on sites that publish feeds. On the Living with Outlook RSS main page, right-click the RSS button that appears near the top of the page on the left-hand side. A shortcut menu will appear.
  • If you are using Internet Explorer, click Copy Shortcut to copy the URL of the RSS feed.

  • If you are using Firefox, click Copy Link Location to copy the URL of the RSS feed.

Now you're ready to subscribe by pasting the shortcut. Follow these steps:
  1. In the Outlook Navigation pane, under Mail Folders, right-click the RSS Feeds folder. This opens a shortcut menu.

  2. Right-click the RSS Feeds folder at the bottom of this image to subscribe by pasting.

  3. In the shortcut menu that appears, click Add a New RSS Feed.

  4. Paste the shortcut from step 1 (http://www.living-with-outlook.com/outlook-rss.xml) into the New RSS Feed dialog box that appears, then click Add. This opens another dialog box that asks, "Add this RSS Feed to Outlook?"

  5. Click Yes to add this feed to Outlook 2007 with its default values. This will work fine for you in the vast majority of cases.

  6. Outlook takes a moment or two to add the feed to the RSS Feeds folder, and download any available article headlines.

That's it. You are now subscribed.
