Select the Outlook Startup Folder

The startup folder determines what you see when Outlook starts. You can control whether you see the Inbox, Unread Mail, Calendar, whatever. Any Outlook folder can be made to appear first, and the steps are the same for Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007.

Note: Outlook Today is a way to look at all your key activities in one place. While it has been pretty much replaced by the To-Do Bar in Outlook 2007, it is still available in both versions of Outlook. This page has more information on Outlook Today and how to set it to appear when you start Outlook.

Leaving aside Outlook Today, here are the steps to follow for changing the folder that appears when you start Outlook:

  1. Click Tools, then Options. This opens the Options dialog box.

  2. Click the Other tab.

  3. In the General section of the Other tabbed page, click Advanced Options. This opens the Advanced Options dialog box.

  4. select the startup folder in advanced options

    The Advanced Options dialog box.

  5. In the General settings section you will find a Startup in this folder field. Click the Browse button to the right of it. This opens the Select Folder dialog box.

  6. Select the folder you want to have appear when Outlook starts, then keep clicking OK until you are back at the main Outlook window.

The next time you start Outlook, it will open in the folder you selected.

As you can see, selecting the startup folder is pretty easy. Having Outlook open to the view you most want to see when you start it up is a small thing that gets your work off to a good start. It's worth the few minutes of effort.
