Subscribe to RSS Feeds with Share This Feed (Outlook 2007)

While anyone can invite you to subscribe to an RSS feed by mailing you a link, Outlook 2007 provides Share This Feed, a streamlined method of inviting and subscribing to a single feed recommended by another Outlook 2007 user. There is also a not-so-streamlined method of inviting and subscribing to a collection of RSS feeds at once.

We'll cover Share This Feed here, and sharing a collection of feeds here

Use Share This Feed to Invite Someone

You use Share This Feed to invite someone to share a feed that you are already subscribed to. You'll need to know the other person's e-mail address, as the sharing is done with a special version of a mail message.

Follow these steps to share a feed with someone:

  1. Open the RSS feed you want to share.

  2. Right-click a topic in that feed. It doesn't matter which topic you choose, any one will do.

  3. In the shortcut menu that appears, click Share This Feed. This opens a feed-sharing message.

  4. Send this message to share a feed with another Outlook 2007 user.

  5. Address the sharing message as you would a normal e-mail message, add any personal message you would like, then click Send to send the invitation on its way. Your part is done.

Using a Share This Feed Message You Receive

If you open a Share This Feed message that someone sent you, it will look something like this:

You received a ShareThis Feed message

You've been invited to share this RSS feed!

Follow these steps to subscribe to the shared feed:
  1. Click Add this RSS Subscription, which is visible at the top of the message if you are looking at it in the Reading Pane, or in the Ribbon if you have opened the message in a new window.

  2. A dialog box appears asking you if you really want to "Add this RSS feed to Outlook?" and offering you the option to configure how the feed works through an Advanced button. While you can configure the feed, I recommend you accept the default settings, and click Yes to add the feed.

After a moment of grinding and whirring, Outlook adds a folder for the new feed to the RSS Feeds folder and displays a list of the topics it has downloaded.
