The Case of the Disappearing News Command

Sometimes, when you add the newsgroup reader command to the Outlook 2003 Go menu, the News command doesn't appear in the menu, and disappears from the Customize dialog box completely.

I've been on this case for a while since it has affected several students in my Introduction to Outlook 2003 (opens new window) course. I gave people a solution, and it usually worked, but not always. Finally, the case is solved. Two different problems can cause the News command to disappear. That explains why the fix sometimes worked and sometimes didn't.

The problem occurs because either:

  • Outlook Express is not configured as the default Newsgroups program in Windows

  • The Personalized Menus and Toolbars files (.PIP files) are damaged in some way

How to Fix the Problem

Since there are two possible causes of the problem, there are two possible solutions. Fortunately for us, Microsoft has provided complete instructions for resolving them in a Knowledge Base article (opens new window). Follow the instructions in this article carefully and you too will solve the case of the missing News command.
