Favorite Folders = Fast Access to Messages
The Favorite Folders pane is a way to get to the mail folders you want quickly. If you are new to Outlook, this might seem like a waste. After all, how many mail folders is somebody likely to have? A lot, it turns out. Someone I know very well has over 100 mail folders, nested two or three levels deep. With that many folders, a quick way to get to favorite ones makes a lot of sense.
Favorite Folders Pane Basics
The basics of this pane are the same between Outlook 2003 and 2007. The pane has evolved between versions, and the
Outlook 2007 Favorite Folders pane
has some handy additional features, but the basics are the same. The pane appears at the top of the Navigation pane when you are working in Mail view. As you can see from the figure, the pane is simply a list of folders. they look the same and act the same as they do elsewhere in the Navigation pane. This is really just a place to find the folders you use most.
The Favorite Folders pane.
First let's talk about the basics that are common to both Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007:- Adding folders
- Rearranging folders
- Removing folders
Adding Folders to the Favorite Folders Pane
You can add folders to the pane in two ways. If you are in Mail view, you can simply drag folders into the pane and drop them there. Exactly where the folder appears in the pane is determined by where you place the cursor when you drop the folder. When the cursor is in the pane, a faint gray line appears that shows you where the folder will land if you drop it right now.NOTE: Adding a folder to this pane does not remove it from its original location. You're just creating a new shortcut to that folder. The other way to add folders to the pane comes into play when you aren't in Mail view. Right-click the folder you want to add to the Favorite Folders pane. In the shortcut menu that appears, click Add to Favorite Folders.
Rearranging Folders
Rearranging folders in the pane is another task you can do two ways. The easiest way to do this is to drag folders around with the mouse until you are happy with the way they are arranged. The other way is to right-click the folder you want to move. In the shortcut menu that appears, click Move Up in List or Move Down in List. This moves the item up or down one spot. I recommend the drag and drop method!
Removing Folders
Now we break with the pattern. There is one way to remove folders from the pane. Right-click the folder you want to remove. In the shortcut menu that appears, click Remove from Favorite Folders. And there you have the basics of working with this pane.
