About POP3

This page offers basic information about POP3. You really don't need to know more than this, but if you want a more detailed explanation, I suggest you look at the relevant Wikipedia entry.

POP3 is short for Post Office Protocol version 3. In layman's terms, POP3 is a set of rules that a mail client program like Outlook uses to retrieve messages from a mail server computer. Using POP3, Outlook typically connects to the server, retrieves all your new messages, then disconnects.

While there are other sets of rules (such as IMAP) that are sometimes used for retrieving mail, most Internet Service Providers support POP3 for this purpose.
